Australia tests national emergency alert system; domestic violence advocates warn vulnerable users

Australia will conduct the first nationwide test of AusAlert, a new mobile emergency warning system, on July 27, 2026, at 2 PM AEST, sending messages to all devices with SIM cards. The CEO of Wesnet, the peak body for specialist women's domestic and family violence services, has recommended that domestic violence survivors using concealed "safe phones" turn them off or switch to airplane mode for 24 hours to avoid alerting abusers to their hidden devices. The recommendation highlights a safety gap in emergency infrastructure design: mass alert systems can inadvertently endanger vulnerable populations.
