Historic cottonwood trees demolished for Arizona border wall construction

Contractors in Southern Arizona demolished a grove of cottonwood trees to make way for new border wall construction, according to NPR. The Sierra Club estimates the trees were more than 200 years old. The demolition drew outcry from conservation groups and residents who say the trees hold deep cultural and ecological significance; as of Thursday, one cottonwood remained standing, with conservationists organizing a sit-in to prevent its demolition.
